Why should I worry about cholesterol? What should I do?

Food rich in saturated fats raise the level of bad cholesterol, or Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), in the blood. People who consume large amounts of saturated fats and cholesterol have a high risk for heart attack or stroke. It is recommended for all adults by age 20 to have their blood cholesterol measured and discussed with the doctor. Consuming less saturated fatty acids can lower your cholesterol and help reduce the risk for coronary heart disease.

What food sources are high in saturated fat and cholesterol?

Remember CAGE, the food items rich in saturated fats and cholesterol. These are LDL-raising food.

Whole milk, 2% milk, ice cream, cream, whole fat yogurt
Hamburger, ground meat, frankfurters, bologna, salami, sausa
Fast food and packaged dinners from the grocery, or when din
Candy, pastries, pies, doughnuts, cookies
